- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.31](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1778.8.31)

> From "He also asked" to "non-extinction" is the sixth question and answer; it still belongs to the fourth vow completing the immeasurable mind of equanimity, namely differentiating correct mindfulness. First, asking "What phenomena do not arise, and what phenomena are not extinguished?" is directly requesting to differentiate the characteristics of non-arising and non-extinction. Next, the answer: "The unwholesome does not arise," which is the two right exertions that prevent the unwholesome phenomena of the two extremes from arising; "wholesome phenomena are not extinguished," which is the two right exertions that assemble the two wholesome phenomena so that they are not extinguished. When unwholesome phenomena do not arise, the virtue of severance is accomplished; when wholesome phenomena are not extinguished, the virtue of wisdom is accomplished. When people of the two vehicles sever unwholesome phenomena so they do not arise, reducing the body to ashes and annihilating consciousness, wholesome phenomena are extinguished; this is conceivable liberation. Now, the inconceivable liberation of the Mahāyāna relies precisely on the Tathāgata's merits. But non-arising and non-extinction are of two kinds: first, conventional truth; second, ultimate truth. This \[here\] is non-arising and non-extinction of conventional truth.
