> Third, the goddess uses the inconceivable to rebuke Śāriputra and the others for abiding in the conceivable. 'The goddess said' to 'characteristics of liberation': the two vehicles do not have sovereign mastery over the phenomena of letters and saṃsāra, and abandon them to enter nirvāṇa. Now it is explained that when the characteristic of letters is separated, saṃsāra does not obstruct nirvāṇa, just as a mustard seed does not obstruct Mount Sumeru; this is precisely the characteristic of inconceivable liberation. Fourth, the explanation: from 'Wherefore' to 'between the two.' A name originally names an essence, and the essence is the dharma. If a dharma were internal, external, or between the two, a name could be like that. Now, seeking the essential dharma and the name, neither can be found; both lack internal, external, or between the two—this is precisely liberation. How could one only call it liberation upon leaving this behind? Another explanation: all dharmas have no essence but only names; that names cannot be found is the characteristic of liberation, which differs from conceivable liberation. The intention here is to clarify the difference between the two liberations. Fifth, the concluding integration: from 'Therefore' to 'characteristic of liberation.' If they are not separate, why would only letters be liberation? The twenty-five states of existence are all liberation. Thus the goddess herself explains: 'Why is that? All dharmas are characteristics of liberation.'
