> From 'Śāriputra said' below: third, Śāriputra seeks further determination. The text has two parts: first, Śāriputra seeks further determination; second, the heavenly maiden rebukes him. First, seeking further determination, saying 'no longer' and so forth: this is the intent of seeking further determination. Formerly, in the Tripiṭaka, Śāriputra heard about severing the three poisons and attaining liberation from the fetters of results. If one says that leaving behind lust, anger, and delusion is not liberation, could what the Buddha taught formerly be incorrect? The goddess then replies: The Buddha taught for two kinds of capacities and conditions. For dull-rooted persons of overweening pride, he taught leaving behind lust, anger, and delusion as liberation. For sharp-rooted persons without overweening pride, the Buddha taught that the very nature of lust, anger, and delusion is liberation.
