> Second, Mañjuśrī's explanation of nonduality consists of two parts: first, the questions of the bodhisattvas; second, Mañjuśrī's explanation. If there is showing and explaining, then consciousness arises and waves are set in motion. If there is neither showing nor explaining, consciousness does not arise, and departing from names and characters, one enters the path beyond verbal explanation. Quiescent and without sound or explanation: this is entering the gate of nonduality. Thus it is said: "When the mind gives rise to conception, that is ignorance; having no conception is nirvāṇa." The analysis of the Distinct and Perfect gates of nonduality above is as previously explained (and so forth). If one constructs five gates corresponding to different capacities: the bodhisattva penetrates the nature of sins and merits as being without bondage and without liberation; this clarifies the meaning of "nature," which is Dharmatā. Dharmatā is eternally abiding and without change, not made by buddhas, devas, humans, nāgas, spirits, or asuras, and ultimately undergoes no alteration; this is entering the Dharma of nonduality through the gate of existence. Although it is called the gate of existence: if it only clarifies the nature, it is the gate of existence; if it clarifies the emptiness of the nature, it is the gate of emptiness. One should follow what the words convey and search carefully for their meaning. As in what was spoken by Subāhu, the mind of the śrāvaka and the mind of the bodhisattva are like empty space, like an illusion; this is the gate of emptiness. As the goddess Vidyāprabhā said, the nature of ignorance is itself illumination; illumination is physical form—how could it not be existence? It also says that illumination cannot be grasped either—how could it not also be non-existence? Again, as in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, that ignorance is illumination is also physical form, which is the meaning of existence. It also says that it is ultimate emptiness, and emptiness is the meaning of non-existence. One should know that this is the gate of both emptiness and existence. Dharmavéśitva said that dharmas are fundamentally unborn and now are without cessation; this is the gate of neither emptiness nor existence. Gates of this double negation are many, while the other three gates are few. Though few, there are altogether four gates; one merely searches what is conveyed to determine the meaning of the gates. The bodhisattvas used the four gates in accordance with the four siddhāntas to preach to matching capacities; those who were meant to awaken all entered the forbearance of dharmas. For those who had not yet awakened, Mañjuśrī then used the fifth, ineffable gate—the repository beyond verbal explanation—to meet their capacities; therefore, the meanings of the five gates are fully present here.
