> Question: The dharma-nature of the twelve links of dependent origination is entirely the direct cause; the wisdom that contemplates dependent origination is universally the revelatory cause; and the virtues of auxiliary cultivation are all the conditional cause. Why make a specific determination where each belongs? Answer: The meaning has both universal and specific aspects. As you have asked, that is the universal meaning; specific correlations are not like that. When the five aggregates of dharma-nature possess ignorance and evil karma, they become the five aggregates of saṃsāra, just as when yin qi arises, water congeals into ice. When ignorance transforms into clarity and non-virtue becomes virtue, the five aggregates are manifested as the five kinds of nirvāṇa, just as when yang qi arises, the ice turns back into water.
