- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.26](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1779.1.26)

> "Great Bhikṣu": "great" is a term of praise. In the world there are those who call themselves "great śramaṇas"; is this not merely an arrogant lapse of etiquette, but also the fault of an unlearned ignorance? \*Zuan\* means to collect. \*Yin\* means to succeed. \*Tan\* means to grasp. \*Ze\* means profound. \*Biye\* is translated here as "Guangyan" \[Vaiśālī\]; this sūtra was preached in the city of Vaiśālī. \*Yuan\* means ocean. The \*Wenxuan\* says: "Deep in the layered depths (\*chongyuan\*)," and its commentary says: "\*Chongyuan\* means the ocean." This means that because Jingxi inherited the doctrinal gates of Tiantai and investigated the purport of this sūtra, he was able to realize that the shallow phenomena of words and letters are themselves the profound principle of liberation.
