> "Received the sūtra at the Master's gate" means receiving the sūtra's meaning at the gate of Jingxi. "Drilled and looked up without ever reaching": in the \*Analects\*, Yan Yuan praised the Master, saying: "The more I look up to it, the higher it seems; the more I drill into it, the harder it appears," hence he says "without ever reaching." "My sighs and praises were never enough": the "Preface" to the \*Mao Poetry\* says: "When sighing and praising are not enough, one sings and chants it." Now, having received the sūtra and grasped its purport, and having also seen Jingxi's abridged text, Lord Liang found his sighs and praises insufficient; thus he composed the preface to narrate these events, setting them forth in written words.
