> Second, from "initial text" below, the basis for abridging, in two parts: first, later scholars dislike its prolixity. "Black and white" refers to the sangha and the laity. In the Western land, the monks wear dyed robes, and the laity wear white robes; hence they are called the black and the white. In this land, the six-entry dye makes xuan, and the seven-entry dye makes zi; zi is actually black. The robes worn by the sons of Śākya are in destroyed colors, not the primary or intermediate colors of the five directions; however, because destroyed color is close to black, they are called black robes, though in fact they are not black. From "profound insight" below: the threefold contemplation and fourfold teaching discussed in this commentary have profound purports and elevated language, so they are not favored by those of shallow knowledge. From "only saying" below: though all admired it, they all found its prolixity troublesome.
