> Second, from "Examining the scripture" downward, differentiating and showing the extensive and abridged versions has two parts: first, explaining that the Sanskrit original is still more extensive. This has two parts: first, generally identifying and raising the question; second, from "Such as ordering" downward, citing the text to directly demonstrate it. The Great Master investigated the text and meaning in a total of five places and knew that the Sanskrit originals in the western lands were still more extensive: first, the "Disciples" chapter; second, the "Bodhisattvas" chapter; third, the "Inquiring about Illness" chapter; fourth, the "Gate of Non-duality" chapter; fifth, the two chapters on "Bodhisattva Practices" and "Akṣobhya Buddha". In these five passages, the phrasing was not fully rendered, which is shown sequentially in the commentary. "Such as the five hundred" refers to after the ordering of the ten persons in the "Disciples" chapter, where the compiler of the scripture narrates that the five hundred great disciples each recounted their own past conditions. "Up to the eight thousand" refers to after the ordering of the four persons in the "Bodhisattvas" chapter, where the compiler of the scripture narrates that all these bodhisattvas each spoke to the Buddha of their own past conditions.
