> Seventh, explaining that ignorance is itself the revealing cause, which has two parts: first the question, second the answer. Regarding "The seventh consciousness is grasping views," Daoxian says: "The fifth chapter of that treatise says: 'Second, the defiled mental consciousness is associated with four afflictions: first, view of self; second, conceit; third, self-love; fourth, ignorance.'" Jingxi says: The seventh consciousness is one, but what it grasps becomes differentiated; therefore this view-consciousness is the seed of the revealing cause. In terms of understanding it is named wisdom; in terms of delusion it is called views. Ancients were not adept \[in this\] and mutually grasped \[their own views\] to form disputes. That the six consciousnesses serve as conditioning \[causes\] is also like this.
