> Second, under "The bodhisattva..." explaining converting others, which has two parts: first, concluding what came before and introducing what follows; second, under "manifesting having..." directly showing converting others. Jingxi says: As for why it fully manifests the two marks: if one only manifests that it can be repented, it is feared that people would say that offenses of inexpiable sins have no fruition. If one only manifests non-repentance, it is feared that people would say offenses cannot be eradicated. In order to eliminate wrong views and give rise to the two goods, these two are established according to their faculties. Regarding "I experience..." and so forth: this has two meanings. Now, in terms of inner reality, one clearly does not lose the joy of the Śūraṅgama; how could one merely speak of the third dhyāna alone? If discussed from the traces, it manifests resistance and the extreme of shamelessness. Therefore, now speaking of the third dhyāna from the side of emerging into the provisional is words opening the traces. Why can it be explained in terms of fundamental and trace? In all Mahāyāna sūtras, except for the Tathāgata's secret of the long-standing fundamental and the prophecies of the Hīnayāna attaining Buddhahood, the passages opening Devadatta exist in both sūtras and treatises; Vasu in the vaipulya \[sūtras\] is an example of this.
