> Second, explaining the nāgas. Master Zhao says: "There are two kinds of nāgas: earth nāgas and space nāgas; their species have four kinds of birth." Regarding "the monk Saṅgharakṣita preaching the Dharma for the four nāgas": he transmitted the four \*Āgama\* sūtras to the four sons of the nāga king. One whose poison operated by sight shut his eyes to receive the sūtra; one whose poison operated by breath closed his mouth to receive the sūtra; one whose poison operated by touch stayed far off to receive the sūtra; one whose poison operated by exhalation turned his back to receive the sūtra. The master reproved them for lacking etiquette. They replied: "Because seeing kills people, and likewise our breath can kill people, therefore we shut our eyes and so forth." It is detailed as in the \*Saṅgharakṣita Sūtra\*.
