> Fourth, clearly identifying the teaching master, which has two parts: first, the purpose of its inclusion. Regarding "the ninety-six kinds": based on the Sūtra of the Ninety-Six Paths, those two fascicles explain their characteristics in detail. Among them, one path is correct—that is, the Buddha path—while the other ninety-five are all heterodox. Where the Avataṃsaka and Da zhidu lun say "all ninety-six are heterodox," this uses the Great to rebuke the Small. Therefore the Śataśāstra says, "All who conform to the śrāvaka path are heterodox." Regarding "the Great Awakened One without a teacher": the Ruiying says, "In my practice I have had no teacher or protector, nor do I have any equal protector." Qie means to submit.
