> Second, turning the wheel of the Dharma. Regarding "major and minor marks": the major are the thirty-two marks, and the minor are the eighty minor characteristics. For the Buddha of the separate and perfect teachings, the major and minor are each eighty-four thousand. Regarding "straightaway taking off the necklace": this uses the text of the parables of the five periods from the Lotus Sūtra to reveal this meaning. Concealing the form of Rocana is like taking off the necklace; manifesting the inferior response body is like putting on ragged clothes—that is, the old bhikṣu. Regarding "the venerable and distinct one within the gate": having established mutual trust, he entered the house and saw the elder's body adorned with necklaces. This is like Śāriputra and the others in the present sūtra seeing the image like the king of Mount Sumeru. From "Or manifesting..." downward: those of newly entered small capacity still see the inferior response. Regarding "because sentient beings doubt": \[Dao\]xian says: In that Prajñāpāramitā, the assembly doubted, saying: "The Buddha was only born in the royal palace, left home at nineteen, and attained the path at thirty; arriving at this point, how could he manifest an inconceivable body?" To quell the assembly's doubt, he merely manifested a sixteen-foot body, with an aura of ten feet in each direction. All of this was for the assembly's doubt. What people ordinarily see is called the ordinary body and ordinary light. From "Nirvāṇa..." downward: although the body manifested is the same as in the Vaipulya \[period\], those receiving the small teaching equally understand the perfect eternity; this is the difference.
