> Eighth, the ten wholesome deeds, in two parts: first, a general demonstration. Regarding "the first is cessation, the second is practice," cessation merely stops preceding evils without afflicting others, while practice is superior virtue that benefits and pacifies. That all are generally called 'wholesome' is because wholesomeness takes accordance with principle as its meaning; extinguishing reversal and returning to truth is therefore called 'according with principle.' Regarding 'these are the ten wholesome deeds of cessation,' it directly demonstrates the sūtra text, meaning that from not killing up to not holding wrong views, all are stopping previous evil deeds. If releasing life, giving, paying respect, truthful speech, conciliatory speech, gentle speech, beneficial speech, contemplation of impurity, compassionate forbearance, and wisdom are named wholesome practices, they are explained in sequence corresponding to not killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, frivolous talk, covetousness, anger, and delusion. Regarding 'the latter four correspond to the four teachings,' Jingxi says: 'The meaning of ceasing evil is common, but it is distinguished according to practice and vows.'
