> Second, the Separate and Perfect \[teachings\]. Jingxi says: The meaning of the nine dhyānas in the Separate and Perfect \[teachings\] must be differentiated according to stages. Thus we know that while their names are the same, their meanings are eternally distinct. Therefore, both teachings have the double profound as well as the true and auxiliary; if not interpreted according to stages, by what means could they be judged? The text has two \[parts\]: first, citing the \*Bodhisattvabhūmi\* to elucidate them. As for the "nine kinds of great dhyānas," they are: first, sovereign; second, all; third, difficult; fourth, all-gates; fifth, good persons; sixth, all practices; seventh, removing affliction; eighth, bliss in this world and other worlds; ninth, pure purity dhyāna. The detailed explanation of their names and meanings is as in the lower scroll of the \*Fajie Cidi\*. As for "Bodhisattvas rely on the ninth," and so forth, this refers to entering this dhyāna at the final thought of virtual enlightenment. As for "attaining the fruit of bodhi, transcending purity," the fruit of bodhi is the Buddha's mind. The Buddha's mind has no delusion and transcends above virtual enlightenment; hence it says "transcending purity"—purity being the ninth dhyāna. Under "This according to," it comprehensively indicates the sequential stages of the nine dhyānas. As for "cultivating intrinsic nature before the bhūmis," Jingxi says: Not yet having entered the first bhūmi, not yet possessing the Buddha-dharmas, and not yet called "all," one cultivates separately in one's corresponding stage, hence it is named "intrinsic nature." As for "the Buddha-fruit transcending the fruit," it is because the Buddha's mind transcends the nine.
