> Second, citing the \*Yingluo \[jing\]\* to refute error. As for "gathering the assembly of the eight dhyānas," this refers to the intrinsic-nature dhyāna up to the dhyāna of bliss in this world and other worlds, which means gathering the bodhisattvas before and on the bhūmis. As for "formerly in the \*Avataṃsaka\*," and so forth, Jingxi says: Regarding the word "formerly," our school's five periods all have concluding teachings. Because the \*Yingluo jing\* concludes the various Vaipulya \[sūtras\], it points to the \*Avataṃsaka\* as "formerly," still separated by the Deer Park. The \*Yingluo\* comes later, which is necessarily the case in principle. Therefore, we know that other explanations not only fail regarding the eight dhyānas, but their meaning of "formerly" is also inappropriate.
