> Third, explaining the third line. Julin is Kauṇḍinya, \[a variation due to\] Sanskrit phonetics or southern and northern dialects. As for the "five men," \[Dao\]xian says: first, Ājñātakauṇḍinya; second, Aśvajit, also called Maxing; third, Bhadrika, also called Mahānāman; fourth, Daśabala-Kāśyapa; fifth, the prince Koli. As for "receiving the precepts upon seeing the truths," the Daśabhāṇavāra explains ten ways of receiving \[the precepts\], and this corresponds to one of them. Therefore, that text states: "There are ten ways of receiving the precepts: like the Buddha himself saying 'Come, monk (ehi bhikṣu),' and one naturally obtains the full precepts; like Mahākāśyapa, obtaining the full precepts through the condition of taking a self-vow; like Ājñātakauṇḍinya, receiving the full precepts because of seeing the truths; like the nun Mahāprajāpatī, receiving the full precepts through the eight reverent rules; like the nun Dharmadinnā, receiving the full precepts by sending a messenger; like the novice Sudāya, receiving the full precepts through doctrinal debate; like the monk Yaśas and others, receiving the full precepts through 'Come \[monk\]'; like Bhadrapāla, receiving the full precepts through the three refuges; like receiving the full precepts with a fifth Vinaya master in a border region (among the five persons there must be one who is the fifth Vinaya master, as clearly explained in the Nirvāṇa Record); and receiving the full precepts through a motion and three proclamations (jñapti-caturtha-karman) before ten persons in the central regions." As for "one person is not called the Saṅgha jewel," it is because four persons are required to constitute a saṅgha. Therefore Jingxi says: "This refutes the ancient masters. If the remaining four persons had not seen the truths, then even if Kauṇḍinya alone was a monk, he would not be called the Saṅgha jewel. How could it be called the Three Jewels appearing in the world? One must first have these three, and then based on them establish the derivative three." What the six masters preached is as in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra.
