> Second, contemplating the mind, in two parts: first, directly explaining the cause and fruition of contemplating the mind, in two parts: first, directly showing cause and fruition, in two parts: first, clarifying the cultivation of contemplative practice as the cause. As for "phenomena and principle mutually assisting," Jingxi says: phenomena are as the preceding seventeen sentences, and principle refers to the present straightforward mind. As for "phenomena and principle being non-virtuous," these are the two delusions of phenomena and principle. As for "because the Buddha land is pure, the realm is pure," the realm is the sentient beings who are transformed; when the realm that is transformed is pure, then the expounding of the Dharma is pure. As for "because the expounding of the Dharma is pure down to clearly pure," because the capacities of beings arise, they cause what is expounded to be defiled, thereby making one not yet capable of transforming with pure wisdom. The path of transformation not yet being complete, the four purities are not yet seen, so that the expounding and so forth have not yet received the name of purity. Wisdom and merit are merit and wisdom. As for "being named contemplation practice as identity," this is in terms of the completion of contemplation, which is the stage of the five grades, while initial cultivation is in the stage of names and words. From "Lotus Sūtra" downward, one proceeds toward the bodhimaṇḍa of contemplative practice, approaching the bodhi of partial realization.
