> Eighth, complete propriety. "Praising form and mind": Jingxi says: "The former phrase is form, the latter phrase is mind." "Containing greatness" (含弘): "弘" means great. "Further abiding..." onwards: the Zuo Zhuan says: "Having awe and inspiring dread is called majestic; having deportment that can be modeled is called deportment." "Emulating the Buddha turning back like an elephant king": Jingxi says: "This tentatively borrows the ceremonial decorum of a response Buddha. When humans emulate this, it is not necessarily entirely so." Some say: possessing the Buddha's marks and characteristics; the former explains deportment in terms of ceremony, while the latter explains deportment in terms of physical appearance. "Now it is said..." onwards: now directly explaining, it means constantly merging with the ultimate and responding universally to the ten realms, hence it is said "not rising," etc. It is also like the Book of Changes: "Silent and unmoving, when stimulated it penetrates throughout." Though this statement is close \[at hand\], it can exemplify what is distant. "Eight unfathomable qualities": first, gradually deepening; second, profound and hard to reach the bottom; third, identical in the single salty taste; fourth, the tide does not exceed its limit; fifth, having various treasure stores; sixth, beings of great bodies dwell within it; seventh, it does not harbor dead corpses; eighth, the myriad streams flow into it without increasing or decreasing. The sūtra text fully matches them with the eight meanings in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, hence it says "The Buddha-dharma is also like this," etc. "Now it is said..." onwards: the mind being as great as an ocean also possesses the eight meanings, exemplified identically to the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. As the text below says, "Within this room appear eight things never seen before," which means all dharmas are fully possessed in the ocean of Buddha-nature; the present text provisionally uses the one about neither increasing nor decreasing. "The myriad streams..." and so forth: the nine paths constantly flow in, yet the Buddha realm does not increase; the all-inclusive wisdom constantly boils, yet the realm of sentient beings does not decrease. Because the nine paths do not sever the goodness of their nature, and the Buddha fruit does not sever the evil of its nature, there is neither increase nor decrease. This should be matched fully with two phrases: although the nine paths flow in, because the mind grasps nothing, it does not increase; although all-inclusive wisdom contemplates, because the mind abandons nothing, it does not decrease. This then completes both the phenomenal and the principle explanations. "Wojiao": the name of a mountain capable of shrinking the ocean waters.
