> Fourth, citing the Buddha's words as proof. Refuting Upāli's doubts and grasping: doubting transgressions and grasping at the small \[vehicle\]. In the small vehicle, there are only formal procedures. If one adopts such grasping following Upāli, one goes against even the small teaching, let alone the great. Since within the Vinaya an offense requires inquiring into the mind, does transgression not arise from the mind? It is only that the small vehicle conceals this aspect and does not speak of mind-only; that it is called non-definitive meaning refers precisely to this. Regarding "If relying on this judgment" and so forth: relying on the Vinaya's inquiring into the mind reveals Upāli's error. As the Mother of the Vinaya says: "An offense must rely on objects and concern the mind to accomplish karma. This is because the mind has intensity and weakness, and objects have superiority and inferiority. Or mind and object are both grave, as when killing a person with the thought of a person; or the object is grave and the mind is light, as when one thinks a person to be a non-person; or the object is light and the mind is grave, as when thinking a non-person to be a person." Furthermore, the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra says: "Killing an ant with deep entanglements, or killing a person with a mind of profound compassion." Thus we know that the small \[vehicle\] Vinaya determines transgressions on the basis of the mind. Hence it now says that if done with a defiled mind, light and heavy are all transgressions alike. From "The Great Being" onward, Jingxi says: "Jingming cites the Buddha's correct teaching of the unproduced eradication to break the small grasping, yet without contradicting the small \[vehicle\]." Regarding "If the mind sees that there are sentient beings" and so forth: sentient beings are merely the sovereign master grasped by the small \[vehicle\]. Therefore, one who possesses grasping is called impure, and because of impurity, there is transgression. Regarding "This then is the knower and the known" and so forth: the mind is the knower, which is the unproduced mind. The transgressions and defilements of sentient beings are the known. Both minds are absent and do not reside within the four clauses; investigating them one by one, neither can be found. Why? Since the unproduced mind is not within the four clauses, how could the unproduced mind of transgression belong to the four? From "Therefore there is no" onward, comparing transgression by means of the mind. Transgressions exist because of the mind; when the mind does not exist, transgressions do not exist. Even all phenomena are like this, so what transgression could be found? From "Not going beyond Suchness" onward, it is fully like Maudgalyāyana's three emptinesses of the perfect teaching; therefore, in the text below, metaphors such as 'like an illusion' are employed.
