> Second, from "Śrāvaka" downward, clarifying that the Hīnayāna resembles non-Buddhists. Regarding "Past up to fixed numbers": Krakucchanda appeared in the world when human lifespan was sixty thousand years, Kanakamuni at forty thousand, Kāśyapa at twenty thousand, and Śākyamuni appeared at one hundred years. When Śākyamuni first taught, five persons realized the fruit and eighty thousand obtained forbearance. Coming down to Maitreya's three assemblies of Dharma preaching, the people are all of a fixed number, as explained in the Sūtra on Maitreya's Attaining Buddhahood. Regarding "At other times they cannot": this means that aside from the lifespans of sixty, forty, twenty thousand, and one hundred, they do not appear at other times, because there is no capacity for attaining the path.
