> Question: If the eyes are not divided according to teachings, why are the powers divided? And within the division, is there still a determination between provisional and real? Answer: This also accomplishes the substance and function of the eyes. If the five eyes are purified, the faculties and powers are necessarily complete. In a provisional reading, the text appears to show mutually generative characteristics, but none are not accomplished through the subduing of Māra; hence, subduing Māra is taken as the fundamental. The textual marks below are both fundamental and generative; how could they merely stand independently, generating one another and grounding one another in succession?
