> Third, common and distinct. As for "cause and effect each having common and distinct," what is shared by everyone is taken as common, while distinct creation and distinct manifestation are taken as distinct. Cause, common and distinct, is as in the text. Within result, the statement "the four great elements and the four sufferings are common" means that the four sufferings are birth and so forth. If within cause it is solely common, this means not distinctly creating the four grave offenses and so forth, and therefore one merely induces a body of the four great elements and the four sufferings among humans; hence it says at the time of result it is also thus. If within cause one distinctly creates the four grave offenses and the ten unwholesome deeds, one distinctly brings forth the severe sufferings of the three destinies, up to being born among humans, where one distinctly receives the grasp of the increase and decrease of the four great elements and the augmentation of the four sufferings. Therefore the \*Avataṃsaka\* states: "The sin of taking life can cause sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies; if born later among humans, they obtain two kinds of retribution: first, frequent illness; second, short lifespan." Clarifying it across the ten unwholesome deeds, this is a distinct cause bringing forth a distinct result. Frequent illness is the increase and decrease of the four great elements; short lifespan is the augmentation of the four sufferings. As for "strong and weak," heavy is strong and light is weak.
