> Second, the answer, which has three parts: first, clarifying that the two sages had the same awakening, so their doctrines may appropriately be used interchangeably. Regarding "entering together the gate of non-dual Dharma," the wonderful principle realized is of one substance without distinction, yet the four siddhāntas establish two different traditions in accordance with capacities. Nāgārjuna inherited from Mañjuśrī, clarifying that all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, which is called the school of one lineage. Vasubandhu inherited from Maitreya, explaining the three absences and two presences, which is called the school of five lineages. The three absences are: icchantikas and the fixed-nature two vehicles all lack the Buddha-nature and cannot become Buddhas. The two presences are: the indeterminate and bodhisattvas both possess the Buddha-nature and will become Buddhas in the future. Therefore, people in the Western regions and this land down to the present day have the distinction of two schools. From "now originally..." downward, although the Great Master inherited the contemplation methods of Nāgārjuna, when he occasionally explained the technical terms of the Buddhist sūtras, what barrier was there to Vasubandhu? Furthermore, knowing that their inner realizations were fundamentally identical and only temporarily differed according to capacities, he therefore slightly utilized the doctrines of the \*Mahāyānasaṃgraha\* in this passage. Jingxi says: Although the answer's intent is such, what our school utilizes takes Nāgārjuna as its standard.
