> Second, clarifying that in the Lotus Sūtra they know the small is different from the great, and therefore it is not overweening pride. Jingxi says: Regarding 'In the Lotus Sūtra,' and so forth: this explains the difference in pride. Estimating the Lotus Sūtra based on the goddess's intended meaning just stated, how could they not have overweening pride merely regarding the small? They also do not have it regarding the great. If one arrives at the Lotus Sūtra, they are equal to the goddess. One should know that those who arose and left in the Lotus Sūtra possessed overweening pride with regard to both the great and small vehicles. Although the Buddha let them leave, his intention was to await a later time.
