> Question: Contemplative reach and contemplative penetration use this same simile; how is their difference discerned? Answer: Comprehending the three delusions in a single mind is the meaning of contemplative reach, whereas the delusions being broken sequentially is the meaning of contemplative penetration. Both contemplate the principle of the middle, like reaching the diamond; thus contemplative reach is horizontal, while contemplative penetration is vertical. Although horizontal and vertical differ, the three delusions are not distinct; therefore the Great Sūtra's single simile is applied in both places.
