> Question: Does this gate break down inverted duality to illuminate nonduality, or does it break down non-inverted duality to illuminate nonduality? Answer: Surveying the various gates, there are briefly three paradigms: First, in terms of inverted duality, it illuminates nonduality; for instance, it says self and what belongs to self are dual, and penetrating these two as nondual is called entering the gate of nonduality. Next, with reference to non-inverted duality, it illuminates nonduality; for instance, it says the three jewels are dual, and knowing these two are nondual is called entering the gate of nonduality. Third, it combinedly illuminates that inverted and non-inverted dualities are nondual; for instance, it says saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are dual, and knowing these two are nondual is called entering the gate of nonduality. Question: Does it break down the three kinds of duality to illuminate nonduality, or does it eliminate the three kinds of duality to illuminate nonduality? Answer: If they are the three kinds of duality seen by the inverted mind, all must be broken down. If the duality of causes and conditions is itself nondual, then without destroying conventional designations one expounds dharmatā, and there is nothing to break down. Moreover, it is inverted sentiment that deems them dual, when in reality there is no duality that can be broken down; hence one only removes their illness without removing their phenomena. Furthermore, the illness is fundamentally empty of inherent nature and also has nothing that can be removed; it is only with reference to conceptual sentiment that one speaks of removing it. Therefore, the way of nonduality illuminated in this gate is different from the Lesser Vehicle's analyzing phenomena to distinguish emptiness. Breaking down the three kinds of duality belongs to the first gate; next, eliminating the designations of the three phenomena belongs to the latter two.
