> Third, externally manifesting the traces of the inconceivable. Whether physical form or voice, as well as the expounding of the root of the inconceivable, whether object or cognition—all are beyond what lower-stage bodhisattvas, the two vehicles, and ordinary beings can fathom; therefore it is called inconceivable. The essence of the inconceivable has only three, and the name "inconceivable" also has only these three meanings. Question: How does this differ from the old explanations of the Guanzhong school? Answer: Master Sengzhao said, "Profound, remote, subtle, and obscure, it cannot be fathomed by the two vehicles," which refers only to the latter meaning among the three meanings of inconceivable. Master Daosheng said, "The inconceivable has two kinds: first, the principle of emptiness, which cannot be fathomed by deluded sentiments; second, the marvelous and extraordinary, which cannot be known by shallow understanding," which articulates the first two meanings among the three meanings. Master Kumārajīva said, "When a dharmakāya bodhisattva performs an action, if they wish to be capable of it, they are capable of it, without needing to generate intention," which grasps one among the three kinds. Now, presenting the three approaches, and further discerning the order of root and trace and the differences between internal and external, embraces all the preceding meanings.
