> Section four: The quantity of meanings included. There are titles established from a single meaning, either solely from the person, or solely based on the Dharma, or solely according to a metaphor. Next, titles established from two meanings either mention both person and Dharma, or title both Dharma and metaphor, or expound both cause and effect together. Next, titles established from three meanings, as Śrīmālā is the person, Lion's Roar is the metaphor, and Great Upāya of the One Vehicle is the Dharma. The Avataṃsaka is also like this: Great Vaipulya is the Dharma, Buddha is the person, and Flower Adornment is the metaphor. Question: Since all sūtras were preached by the Buddha, why does the Avataṃsaka alone specifically indicate "Buddha"? Answer: The Avataṃsaka specifically titles "Buddha" because the Buddha preached it when he had first attained enlightenment, and therefore it was titled with "Buddha." Prior to that, there had been no preaching by the Buddha; after this, there was no need to indicate the master, and therefore this sūtra alone specifically indicates "Buddha." Furthermore, the seven locations and eight assemblies of the Avataṃsaka were the Buddha entering the Gandhavatī samādhi to preach this Dharma-gate, so it was necessary to indicate "Buddha." Furthermore, in the seven locations and eight assemblies of the Avataṃsaka, bodhisattvas were inspired to speak, so one might suppose it is a bodhisattva sūtra and not preached by the Buddha. Therefore, it is explained: "All the bodhisattvas relied on the Buddha's spiritual power to preach before the Buddha," which is precisely the Buddha's preaching, and thus "Buddha" was put in the title.
