> Fifth, as for \[the teaching being\] suitable to be heard because the faculties of the assembly at that time were mature: With the eye of great compassion and wisdom, the Buddha contemplates all the world throughout the six periods of day and night. His skillful means and beneficial activities are free from four errors: first, there is no unsuitable place; second, there is no unsuitable time; third, there is no improper teaching; fourth, there is no unsuitable recipient. How much more so as this sūtra says: "Regarding the deportment and movements of the Buddhas, the Tathāgatas, whatever they perform is entirely the work of a Buddha." Therefore, when this sūtra was preached, it was suitable for the assembly to hear; it was not given in vain without benefit to the listeners. In this sūtra, there are altogether thirteen instances of benefit. First, in the introductory chapter, because the characteristics of the adornment and purification of the Buddha-fields were expounded, five hundred elders' sons attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas; eighty-four thousand people all generated the mind directed toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi; thirty-two thousand people understood that conditioned dharmas are impermanent, became remote from dust and free from defilement, and attained the purity of the Dharma-eye; and eight thousand bhikṣus attained the liberation of mind through the exhaustion of the contaminants. In the chapter on "Upāya," Vimalakīrti manifested illness, and because he expounded the Dharma in response to their inquiries, countless thousands of people all generated the mind directed toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi. In the two chapters on the "Śrāvakas" and the "Bodhisattvas," although they had previously encountered Vimalakīrti and each had realizations upon hearing him at that time, when dispatched to reply to the Buddha, their attainment of the Way is not stated. In the chapter on "Inquiring after Illness," because they conversed together, eight thousand devaputras all generated the mind directed toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi. In the chapter on the "Acintya," Mahākāśyapa used the analogy of being born blind to illustrate his failure to understand the vimokṣa-dharmaparyāya; thirty-two thousand devaputras all generated the mind directed toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, and eight thousand bodhisattvas were able to enter into the power of the bodhisattvas' wisdom of skillful means and into the realm of acintya-vimokṣa. The chapter on "Contemplating Sentient Beings" and the chapter on the "Bodhipakṣa-dharmas" do not mention any attainment of the Way. In the chapter on "Entering the Dharma Gate of Non-duality," five thousand bodhisattvas all entered the Dharma gate of non-duality. In the chapter on the "Fragrant Platform," ten matters superior to other Buddha-fields were explained, and by accomplishing eight dharmas one is born in a pure land; five thousand devaputras all generated the mind directed toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, and ten thousand bodhisattvas attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas. In the chapter on the "Bodhisattva Practice," the nine million bodhisattvas from the zenith rejoiced upon hearing the teaching on the exhaustible and the inexhaustible, scattered wonderful incense and flowers across the great trichiliocosm, and after making offerings to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the bodhisattvas, suddenly disappeared and returned to their own land. In the chapter on "Contemplating the Tathāgata," because they saw the world of Abhirati and the Tathāgata Akṣobhya, fourteen nayutas of people all generated the mind directed toward anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi and vowed to be born in that realm, and the Buddha predicted their future rebirth there. The chapter on the "Offering of the Dharma" and the chapter on "Entrustment" do not mention any attainment of the Way.
