> Commentary: The virtue of vastly expounding the Dharma and bringing about awakening. Below it says: 'Expounding the Dharma without fear, like a lion's roar.' At first glance, this seems to have the same meaning of awakening as here. Below, it means expounding the Dharma decisively and without fear, like a lion's roar; here, it means awakening living beings and causing their intention for the Way to increase, like a lion's roar; therefore they are not the same. When a lion roars, it is able to accomplish eleven things. The \*Nirvāṇa-sūtra\* says: 'First, to crush those that are not true lions but falsely claim to be lions; second, to test its own physical strength; third, to purify its own dwelling place; fourth, to make known its location; fifth, to make the herd free from fear; sixth, to cause those sleeping to awaken; seventh, to prevent beasts from becoming negligent; eighth, to make all beasts come and submit; ninth, to tame great fragrant elephants and the like; tenth, to teach its cubs; eleventh, to adorn its retinue.' When these bodhisattvas make the lion's roar, it is also like this: first, to crush the māra armies; second, to manifest the power of the assembly; third, to open the domain of buddha practices; fourth, to act as a refuge for those with wrong views; fifth, to comfort fearful living beings; sixth, to awaken living beings sleeping in ignorance; seventh, to induce a mind of repentance in those who practice evil dharmas; eighth, to reveal wrong views so all living beings know that the six teachers and others are not true lions; ninth, to crush Pūraṇa and the others, and also cause the two vehicles to give rise to a mind of remorse; tenth, to teach the bodhisattvas of the five abodes and so forth to give rise to great power of mind; eleventh, to cause the assembly of right views to give rise to no fear toward those of wrong views. Because these bodhisattvas are able to crush and subdue, they expound with the sound of a great lion's roar. 'Expound' (fu) means to open and initiate, alerting and awakening those of initial capacity. 'Elaborate' (yan) means to speak broadly, awakening and examining those whose faculties are ripe. Since they abide on the tenth ground, they can spread clouds and rain to preach the Dharma throughout the ten directions, and the sound of their preaching spreads far throughout the ten directions. A melodious and wondrous voice is called a 'fair voice.' 'Far' (xia) means distant; 'resounding' (zhen) means echoing forth. The Bhagavat's voice is complete with vast sound, heard equally by all regardless of the size of the assembly. With these bodhisattvas, their fair voice also permeates throughout the ten directions according to the assembly, because they have attained vast sound. The older version saying 'their fame was heard in the ten directions'—what distinction would there be between that and 'their name and fame were lofty and far' below? If one explains that their 'name' was the sound of preaching the Dharma, then there is no such flaw.
