> Commentary: In explaining the practice, the preceding showed the cultivation of bodily action, and the following shows the cultivation of verbal action. Material offerings being insufficient, one pays homage with the body; bodily offerings being insufficient, one therefore raises praise in verse, indicating the depth of the mind of taking refuge and displaying the completeness of the path of reverence. This explains the principles and norms of offering praise; from here on, it directly relates the words of praise. "Gāthā" is Sanskrit; here it is translated as song (song). "Song" means to praise beautifully; four lines are connected together, because the phrasing and meaning are artful. The older rendering "ji" was a corrupt and abbreviated phonetic form.
