> The Commentary says: The passage below shows the exhaustion of his reasoning: first comes the cross-examination, and next the exposition. Within the exposition there are again two parts: first, he relates his own affair; second, he reveals the other's words. Within relating his own affair there are three parts: first, clarifying that he was walking back and forth; next, the Brahmā gods' coming to ask; and finally, stating his correct answer. This is the cross-examination and the clarification of his walking back and forth. In the Western regions, the ground is damp and what one eats is difficult to digest. They lay bricks to make a path meant for walking to digest food, coming and going just as people in the world weave threads, hence it is called caṅkrama (jingxing). Due to this, one can also explain the Dharma and recite sūtras, and practitioners of dhyāna also cultivate the mark of illumination and the mark of alertness.
