> Regarding the explanation of the chapter title: the norms and rites of benefiting and gladdening are called \*fāng\* (method); rescuing in response to the moment is called \*biàn\* (expedience). Conforming to principle and profiting living beings is \*shàn\* (skillful); the wondrous and extraordinary functioning of wisdom is \*qiǎo\* (cunning). However, there are skillful means that can be known at lower stages; now, revealing what is not an object of their speech, surpassing the sentiments of lower stages, it is named "inconceivable." Now, clarifying this matter, it is therefore also named "revealing": the inconceivable skillful means are that which is revealed, and the teaching is that which reveals. The older translation lacked these words, as was already stated at the beginning.
