> Commentary: Below is the specific reproach. There are four parts: 1. evil dharmas have long perished; 2. reproaching it as coarse speech; 3. roots of goodness are already complete; 4. immediately experiencing shame and humiliation. These constitute two pairs: because evil dharmas are exhausted, saying there is an illness is coarse; because good dharmas are complete, having an illness is shameful. Hence it is divided into four; this is the first passage. The Buddha's substance is anāsrava, compounded like vajra. The causes and fruits of saṃsāra, present and seeded evil dharmas, as well as subtle latent habit energies have all been permanently severed. All goods being complete, what illness could there be? Illness arises from evil causes. Discordance of the four great elements is called illness, and from this illness suffering and distress thereupon arise. The Buddha's goods being completely fulfilled, what suffering or distress could there be? Good causes do not bring about the fruit of suffering and distress.
