> Commentary: This reveals the reason why the nirmāṇa-buddha displays disease. As for the 'five-turbidities world', 'turbid' means dregs and defilement; just as dregs and defilements are in food, it is called turbid. First, the turbidity of afflictions, because afflictions are heavy. Second, the turbidity of views, because the five views vie with one another. Third, the turbidity of lifespan, because life is extremely short. Fourth, the turbidity of sentient beings, because sentient beings are evil. Fifth, the turbidity of the kalpa, \[marked by\] famine, epidemic, and war, which arise in succession at the ages of thirty, twenty, and ten years. At present, the preliminary signs of these already exist; this is as explained in the third fascicle of the Commentary on the Lotus Sūtra. Śākyamuni, out of compassion, was born into this evil world; in order to teach and guide sentient beings currently undergoing evil karma, poverty, and suffering, as well as sentient beings performing various evil causes and actions, he manifested being ill like them. It is not that the Buddha truly has \[illness\], but because the World-Honoured One transforms sentient beings according to their type. He reveals that all evil karma must yield an evil fruit, and that even the World-Honoured One currently undergoing it still does not escape it. He also wishes to make future virtuous ones restrain themselves when ill: 'Even the Buddha manifested having it; what kind of person am I?' Because sentient beings are ill, the Buddha is also ill; it is for this reason that he manifests illness, not that the Buddha is truly ill.
