'Twelve years' refers to the twelve abodes (vihāras) of a bodhisattva: the lineage abode, the resolute practice abode, the extremely joyful abode, the higher moral discipline abode, the higher mental training abode, the three wisdoms abode, the signless-with-effort abode, the signless-effortless abode, the unobstructed comprehension abode, the supreme bodhisattva abode, and the Tathāgata abode. The preceding twelve abodes are called the bodhisattva\['s abodes\], revealing entry into the bodhisattva stages. Having never heard the teachings of the two vehicles expounded; the teaching and principle being in harmony with each other is called 'corresponding'.
