> Commentary: Below is the extensive exposition. There are thirty-seven clauses on the bodhisattva's practice, dividing into two: first thirty-four clauses are not the same as the practice of ordinary beings and the two vehicles, which is called the bodhisattva's practice; afterwards there are three clauses, attaining the superior without discarding the inferior, which is called the bodhisattva's practice. In the first part there are seven divisions: first, one clause is general; next are four clauses, which in sequence are not the same as ordinary beings and the two vehicles; next are four clauses, pairwise not the same as the two vehicles and ordinary beings; next are four clauses, in sequence not the same as the two vehicles and ordinary beings; next are seven clauses, only not the same as the two vehicles; next are two clauses, only not the same as ordinary beings; next are twelve clauses, only not the same as the two vehicles. This is the general one. 'Place' means location, the place where practice is carried out, or the place of principle. The rest can also be known. In Kumārajīva's older version there were thirty-one clauses, twenty-eight clauses not the same as ordinary beings and the two vehicles; afterwards there were three clauses, attaining the superior without discarding the inferior. In the first part there were two divisions: first ten clauses, mixedly not the same as ordinary beings and the two vehicles; afterwards eighteen clauses, only not the same as the two vehicles. In the first part there were four subdivisions: first three clauses, mixedly not the same as ordinary beings and the two vehicles; next two clauses, in sequence not the same as ordinary beings and the two vehicles; next three clauses, the first two not the same as the two vehicles and the last one not the same as ordinary beings; afterwards two clauses, in sequence not the same as the two vehicles and ordinary beings.
