- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1785.1.11)

> From "At that time the Tathāgata" downward is the narrative preface, because it narrates the subsequent seventeen chapters. It is also called the particular preface: it distinguishes this from other sūtras and also serves as the basis for the specific title; hence it is termed "particular." The particular meaning has seven aspects: first, from "At that time the Tathāgata" downward, one and a half lines is the particularity of entering samādhi; second, from "This Suvarṇaprabhāsa" down to the end of the twenty-seven lines of verse is the particularity of narration; third, from the Chapter on the Span of Life downward is the particularity of conceiving doubt; fourth, from "The Mahāsattva thus" downward is the particularity of auspicious responses; fifth, from "Ruciraketu seeing the Buddha" downward is the particularity of expressing doubts and thoughts; sixth, from "The Four Buddhas told" downward is the particularity of ending doubts; seventh, from "The gods of the desire and form realms" downward is the particularity of gathering the assembly. As for their arising: The Buddha is constantly in samādhi, yet the various capacities appeal to the Buddha, and the Buddha wishes to respond to them; hence he displays the formal deportment. The Tathāgata is eternally tranquil, yet still takes delight in samādhi, entering to roam the dharmatā and emerging to narrate the King of Sūtras. Ruciraketu, hearing the profound Dharma, doubted: since the Dharma is eternal, why is the human lifespan short? Therefore he conceived doubt. Through the power of the bodhisattva's merit, his doubt could elicit a response; because of the response, the Four Buddhas appeared; when the Buddhas appeared, he expressed his doubt; because he expressed his doubt, the Buddhas then ended his doubt; and because the Dharma rain was to be showered, the great assembly gathered like clouds. These seven matters differ from other sūtras; hence they are termed "particular." The explanation of the seven particularities is finished.
