- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1785.1.21)

> "Surpassing the pure practice of all bodhisattvas" directly distinguishes \[it\]. Bodhisattvas dwell in an unreached stage, because what is traversed by their wisdom cannot yet be profound and vast. The \*Bodhisattvabhūmi\* says: "Bodhisattvas attain nine kinds of dhyāna. The first is called the dhyāna of own-nature; if one enters this dhyāna, one enters the pure realm of the true mark and dharmatā, of which the two vehicles have not even heard the name, much less practiced it. If one enters the ninth, the purely pure dhyāna, all defiling bondages, common and distinct, both actual and habitual, are completely eradicated; hence it is called 'purely pure dhyāna'." From the lower stages down, all possess residual habit-energies; the Buddha abides at the summit of the tenth stage, and upon entering this dhyāna, he surpasses all bodhisattvas. The \*Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa\* says: "With mind purified, he has already crossed beyond all dhyāna concentrations." This is precisely the meaning. It is also citing his lofty station to distinguish the profundity of dharmatā.
