> Regarding "dwelt": the Buddha is the one who dwells, and Rājagṛha is the place dwelt in. Paramārtha explains that the dharma of dwelling has eight \[aspects\]: first, dwelling within the trichiliocosm; second, dwelling in the place of reliance, which is the royal city; third, dwelling in the fivefold Dharmakāya, with life-span presently persisting; fourth, dwelling in deportment to benefit beings; fifth, the divine dwelling, dwelling in dhyāna-concentration; sixth, the Brahmā dwelling, dwelling in the four immeasurable states of loving-kindness and compassion; seventh, the noble dwelling, dwelling in the three samādhis; eighth, the dwelling in the great place, dwelling in the ultimate truth. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa's four dwellings subsume the eight: the divine dwelling and Brahmā dwelling subsume his divine dwelling and concentration dwelling; the noble dwelling subsumes his fivefold lifespan dwelling; the Buddha dwelling subsumes his dwelling in the great place; furthermore, there is the trace-dwelling in Rājagṛha, which subsumes his three dwellings within the realm, of reliance, and of deportment. The Master of Tiantai states: The sixteen-foot body Buddha dwells in the absolute truth; the combined sixteen-foot majestic body Buddha dwells in both the absolute and the middle; the majestic body Buddha dwells in both the conventional and the middle; the Dharmakāya Buddha dwells in the Middle Way. In contemplative interpretation: the contemplation of emptiness dwells in the absolute; the contemplation of the provisional dwells in the conventional; the contemplation of the ultimate truth dwells in the middle.
