> Third, from "this" down, the division having four kinds of capacities. Question: Above the four teachings were clarified; why does it now only mention the teaching and listening of the three vehicles? Answer: Because among the three vehicles, the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas must be discussed in terms of the Tripiṭaka and Shared teachings, whereas clarifying bodhisattvas must cover all four teachings. The three vehicles are a general discussion, while the four teachings are a specific distinction; since the listeners are of the three vehicles, the speaker must be of the four Buddhas; since there are different understandings of a single sound, there are also different sights of a single body. The previous clarification of the "conjoined body" had its intention here.
