# 金光明經文句記 3.71

金光明經文句記 3.71

- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.71](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1786.3.71)

二、正釋名，五：初、約伏首釋。然懺悔二字乃雙舉二音。梵語懺摩，華言悔過，以由悔過是首伏等五種之義。今既華梵二音並列，是故大師以首釋懺、以伏釋悔，乃至慚愧對釋懺悔，欲令稟者即於二字修首伏行及慚愧等。斯是善巧說法之相，故不可以華梵詁訓而為責也。初、約首伏釋。首，音獸。自陳罪也。欵，誠也。

> Second, directly explaining the name has five parts: first, explaining in terms of prostrating and submitting. The two characters chan-hui actually voice two languages together. Sanskrit is kṣama; the Chinese is "repenting of transgressions" (huiguo), because repenting of transgressions contains five meanings, such as confessing and submitting. Now that the Chinese and Sanskrit sounds are listed together, the Great Master therefore explains chan as confessing (shou) and hui as submitting (fu), and furthermore explains chan and hui as matched with shame (can) and conscience (kui), wishing practitioners to cultivate the practice of confessing and submitting, shame, conscience, and so forth directly through the two characters. This is the mark of skillful preaching of the Dharma, and one cannot fault it on the basis of Chinese and Sanskrit etymology. First, explaining in terms of confessing and submitting: shou is pronounced shou; it is stating one's sins oneself; kuan means sincerity.
