The Buddhas of the three periods of time take awakening-wisdom as their life, yet they share the same mind-nature with sentient beings. Because of a lack of perfuming cultivation, they do not receive offerings, and the lifespans of all Buddhas, while not ceasing, cease—taking concealment as cessation. Now, by taking the hearing of the sūtra as making offerings, this constitutes receiving offerings, and the lifespans of all Buddhas, while not arising, arise—taking manifestation as arising. Practitioners must realize that sentient beings and Buddhas are non-different; when wisdom arises from hearing the sūtra, the Buddhas appear, because all Tathāgatas share one identical wisdom. The Buddhas of contemplative practice, of resemblance, and of partial realization are not two and not distinct from the ultimate Buddha. Furthermore, one realizes that the arising of wisdom is the arising of the three Buddhas; being three yet one, they are neither vertical nor horizontal. This is desiring to make offerings to and desiring to know the Buddhas of the three periods of time.
