> First, clarifying the medicines and illnesses of contemplation. The three poisons mean the one-sided arising of greed, anger, or delusion. Speaking of 'equal parts' means the equal arising of the three poisons. However, the natures of greed, anger, and delusion are inherently contrary, and the three minds can never arise simultaneously together; they simply arise irregularly and intermingled, and hence are called 'equal parts.' One part consists of twenty-one thousand; the four parts together make eighty-four thousand gates of afflictive defilements. These are the mental illnesses of sentient beings in the ten realms; contrasted with the preceding retributive bodily illnesses, which are external, the present four parts are called internal illnesses. The four practices such as counting breaths, contrasted with the preceding various sweet and pungent medicines, which are all phenomenal treatments, are now the four contemplations called the medicine of the Dharma.
