> As for explaining according to the ancients, it is traditionally said that Paramārtha stated: "In the foreign language, suvarṇa here means 'gold', prabhāsa here means 'light', uttama here means 'radiance', indra here means 'sovereign', and rājan here means 'king'. Therefore, versions originating in the Western Regions say Buddha-sūtra, Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra, and Sovereign-King-sūtra." The meaning here is that "Buddha-sūtra" takes its name from that which is explained. "Suvarṇaprabhāsa" is a name combining phenomenon and metaphor. It is also called "Sovereign-King-sūtra" after its function. If one refers only to the metaphorical designation "golden light and radiance", these three words represent the sūtra's three triads as its essence: first, the three bodies; second, the three virtues, namely prajñā, liberation, and the dharma body; third, the three stations, namely prior to the path, on the path, and subsequent to the path. Prior to the path is the inherent buddha-nature abiding in its self-nature; on the path is the elicited buddha-nature; subsequent to the path is the buddha-nature attained as fruition. In accordance with the old interpretation, these also correspond to the cause of acquisition, the cause of preparatory application, and the cause of causal fulfillment, matching the preceding three kinds of buddha-nature respectively.
