> Regarding the provisional and the real: According to the Buddhabhūmisūtra-śāstra: 'When Śākyamuni spoke this sūtra, the great assembly prior to the grounds saw the transformation body residing in this defiled land expounding the Dharma for them, while the great assembly on the grounds saw the enjoyment body residing in the pure buddha-field expounding the Dharma for them. Although what was heard was identical, what was seen was distinct.' According to this, since the sūtra text was in the defiled land for the assembly prior to the grounds, the śrāvakas are real; the great bodhisattvas should be in the pure land, and since they are also listed within the defiled land, they are transformationally created. Were it not so, these great bodhisattvas, being above the eighth ground, have assumed bodies of transformative change; how could sentient beings of this world-system be able to see them? Another explanation: The Buddha expounding this sūtra actually encompassed both transformation and other-enjoyment; because of this, if it were their real bodies, the bodhisattvas constantly resided in the pure land hearing the sūtra from the Buddha. The compilers could not cite both, but merely stated the land commonly seen by the three vehicles. Or, 'the dwelling place of the most pure Tathāgata' reveals that the bodhisattvas, equally capable of cognitive realization, are also in that land, which is subsumed under the pure land. However, regarding the śrāvakas, according to the Mahāyānāvatāra-śāstra, the one thousand two hundred persons were all transformationally created. Relying on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, Śāriputra and the others are of three kinds: first, of indeterminate nature; second, of determinate nature; third, transformationally created. The treatise states: 'There were immeasurable Śāriputras of the same name as he.' Thus we know there are many categories. Furthermore, the Bodhisambhāra-śāstra states: 'The Śāriputra prophesied in the Lotus Sūtra was a transformation made by buddhas and bodhisattvas'; all were transformations. The second fascicle of the Lotus Sūtra says: 'In the past, under two trillion buddhas, I also instructed and transformed you, but you have now forgotten it all.' This refers to the indeterminate nature. The Saddharmapuṇḍarīkasūtra-śāstra states: 'It was for two types of śrāvakas, excluding those of determinate nature and those of excessive pride, because their faculties were not yet mature.' Now, in this assembly of the sūtra, it may encompass all three types; regarding the remaining assemblies, the provisional and the real are difficult to know fully.
