> There are also two conditions: first, for the saddharma to long abide; second, to benefit sentient beings. Chapter One of the Lotus Sūtra says: 'With various causes and conditions and through immeasurable parables, illuminating the Buddha-dharma and awakening sentient beings.' Illuminating the Buddha-dharma to cause the Dharma to long abide is great wisdom; awakening sentient beings to benefit sentient beings is mahākaruṇā. This sūtra is also like this: the 'Chapter on Confession' says, 'Abiding in life for inconceivable eons, according with capacities to teach the Dharma and benefit the multitude of beings'—this is mahākaruṇā. As the 'Chapter on Entrustment' says, 'Who among you can generate the aspiration to guard, broadly proclaim, and propagate, being able to cause the saddharma to abide long in the world?'—this is great wisdom. Alternatively, the intention to make the Dharma abide long may be to benefit sentient beings, which is mahākaruṇā; or benefiting the multitude of beings may be to make the Dharma abide long, which is great wisdom. It also leads the hearers to cultivate the two benefits: making the Dharma abide long cultivates svārtha, while benefiting sentient beings cultivates parārtha. Fascicle 82 of the Yogācārabhūmi says: 'If one possesses such fivefold preaching of the Dharma, like fivefold music, it can cause self and others to generate great joy, and can further initiate benefit for self and others.' The explanation of this fivefold \[preaching\] is clarified in full in the Commentary on the Benevolent King Prajñā\[-sūtra\].
