> Commentary: Below, clarifying \[nirvāṇa\] without a residue of support, there are three parts: first, the statement; second, the inquiry; third, the explanation. Saying that relying on this dharmakāya nirvāṇa without residue is spoken of, there are two explanations. One says: Relying on the dharmakāya of tathatā, there is no support whatsoever, which is called nirvāṇa without a residue of support. If so, what is the difference between nirvāṇa and the dharmakāya? Answer: From the perspective of being the support of virtues, it is called the dharmakāya; from the perspective of the quiescence of all supports, it is called nirvāṇa. Another explanation: The mental factors of the four wisdoms are the wisdom of tathatā, which is the self-enjoyment \[body\] and is also called the dharmakāya. Relying on this self-enjoyment, it does not manifest taking birth or proclaiming extinction in the Twin Sala Trees; it is free from all supports, and is called without residue. What is revealed relying on this is called nirvāṇa without a residue of support. Question: Through how many cessations is nirvāṇa without residue called nirvāṇa? Answer: Through two cessations. Chapter 50 of the Yogācārabhūmi says: "First, through the cessation of quiescence; second, through the cessation of non-affliction. As for the cessation of quiescence, it means having previously attained and realized the four kinds of quiescence in the ground with a residue of support; now, in the nirvāṇa realm without a residue of support, there are also four kinds of quiescence that are supremely quiescent." The meaning here is that because of re-attaining quiescence, it says "through the cessation of quiescence." 1. Quiescence of calculation and teaching; 2. quiescence of all supports; 3. quiescence of the suffering of dependent supports; 4. quiescence of doubts arising from dependent supports. As for the quiescence of calculation and teaching, calculation refers to wisdom; teachings arise due to calculation, and calculation is generated from teachings, so it is called calculation and teaching. Because conventional designations are severed in \[the state\] without a residue of support, it is called the quiescence of calculation and teaching. As for the quiescence of all supports, it is like the previous eight supports being completely extinguished without residue, so it is called the quiescence of all supports. As for the quiescence of the suffering of dependent supports, the various sufferings generated by the previous eight supports are also eternally extinguished, so it is called the quiescence of the suffering of dependent supports. Just as relying on that support this support of suffering is generated, it is called a dependent support. Fourth, as for the quiescence of doubts arising from dependent supports, it means that doubts arising relying on the eight sufferings are completely pacified without residue, so it is called the quiescence of doubts arising from dependent supports. Question: How many kinds of residue does nirvāṇa with residue have, that it is now called without a residue of support? Answer: There are seven. 1. Residue of cause and fruit: the cause of defilement is already exhausted, but the fruit of suffering is not yet perished; there remains a residue of the support of suffering. The Cheng weishi lun says: "Nirvāṇa without a residue of support refers precisely to tathatā. Departing from the suffering of saṃsāra, defilements being already exhausted, the remaining support is also extinguished." 2. Residue of unwholesome karma: for a person beyond training (aśaikṣa), unwholesome karma is exhausted, but the remaining wholesome and indeterminate karma remains. 3. Residue of the truth of suffering. 4. Residue of the truth of the origin. 5. Residue of the truth of cessation. 6. Residue of the truth of the path. Therefore the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra says: "There remains birth that is not yet exhausted, so there will be rebirth. There remains pure conduct that is not accomplished, so affairs are not pure. Affairs are not ultimate, so there will be tasks to be done. Because that is not crossed over, there will be things to be abandoned." Respectively, suffering, cessation, path, and origin—that is, the uncreated four noble truths. In view of the indeterminate lineage, there remains that which is not fully understood and should be cultivated and abandoned, etc., but not in view of the determinate lineage. 7. Residue of nominal and real: because the response and transformation \[bodies\] are nominal.
